Description
Butterflies in The Universe (2026)
Original Fine Art Painting by Ashvin Harrison
Artwork Description:
There are moments when music feels larger than sound itself. Moments when a melody unlocks memories, emotions, dreams, and possibilities that words can never fully explain. Butterflies In The Universe explores that feeling — the moment where music becomes transformation.
Inspired by a model muse from the Gold Coast, Australia, the artwork portrays a figure completely immersed in sound, her eyes closed as though disconnected from the physical world and transported somewhere far beyond it. The headphones become a gateway rather than an object, opening into an explosion of colour, movement, energy, and life.
Within the flowing abstract universe surrounding her are butterflies painted in the colours of the planets in the solar system. Each butterfly represents a different celestial influence, with one particularly symbolic butterfly carrying the continents of Earth across its wings. Together they transform the composition into a visual metaphor for human experience itself — fragile, beautiful, constantly changing, yet connected to something infinitely larger.
The butterflies symbolise transformation and personal growth, while the cosmic colour palette suggests the vastness of imagination, creativity, and consciousness. The artwork invites viewers to consider how music, art, memory, and emotion can carry us beyond ordinary existence, allowing us to briefly experience something universal.
Executed in Ashvin Harrison’s signature Motusrealism style, the highly detailed monochromatic figure provides a calm centre to the composition, while thousands of energetic splashes, lines, and layered colours create a sense of movement that appears to flow endlessly beyond the canvas. The contrast between realism and abstraction creates the impression that the figure is simultaneously grounded and weightless, existing between reality and imagination.
Adding further depth, the artwork incorporates shimmering gold acrylic highlights and reflective diamond sparkle medium. These elements interact with changing light throughout the day, creating subtle shifts in colour and luminosity that cannot be fully captured in photography. As viewers move around the artwork, new reflections emerge, enhancing the sensation that the butterflies and universe are alive with motion.
Butterflies In The Universe is ultimately a celebration of imagination, transformation, music, and wonder. It reminds us that although we may feel small within the vastness of existence, we each carry entire universes within our own minds.
