The Gravity of Curiosity is an invitation to remain curious—to pull at the edges of the world we know and discover what might exist beyond it.

At the centre of this dreamlike original artwork, a young elephant does exactly that. With its trunk, it catches the torn edge of an apparently ordinary white reality and pulls it downward, revealing an extraordinary universe hidden behind the surface. The gesture is playful, but the idea beneath it is deeper: curiosity is often the force that allows us to see beyond the limits of what we have been shown.

Beyond the torn canvas lies a surreal world where scale, gravity and logic no longer behave as expected. Earth appears as a tiny blue planet suspended close to the opening, while other planets drift throughout an immense sky transitioning from warm sunset tones into deep celestial blue. A whale floats weightlessly through space. A seahorse with monarch butterfly wings shares the sky with planets. A colourful hot-air balloon hangs impossibly among the stars.

Hidden within the abstraction is one of the artwork’s smallest narrative details: a tiny human figure leaps from a sweeping strand of paint, attempting to reach the hot-air balloon above. It is an almost absurdly ambitious act—and deliberately so. The figure becomes a symbol of the human instinct to explore, to take chances and to reach for something that may initially appear impossible.

The elephant itself adds another layer to this idea. Rather than being intimidated by what lies beyond the torn surface, it appears fascinated by it. That innocent curiosity becomes the catalyst for the entire scene. The artwork asks what might happen if, instead of accepting the boundaries placed before us, we investigated them. What worlds, ideas and possibilities remain invisible simply because we have never thought to look?

There is also a deliberate tension between the vastness of the universe and the innocence of the elephant discovering it. Earth—our entire known home—is reduced to one tiny object within an enormous field of possibility. The surreal planets, whale, butterfly, balloon and solitary adventurer create a world that feels somewhere between a childhood dream and a philosophical thought experiment.

Created in Ashvin Harrison’s distinctive Motusrealism style, highly detailed coconut charcoal realism meets expressive acrylic and oil abstraction. The restrained monochromatic elephant and torn white surface give way to an explosion of blues, peach, coral, gold and celestial darkness, visually separating the familiar world from the limitless imagination beyond it.

The Gravity of Curiosity ultimately celebrates wonder, imagination and the courage to question what appears certain. It suggests that curiosity has a gravity of its own—quietly pulling us toward places we have never been, ideas we have never considered and possibilities we cannot yet see.
